Manvers Lake Water Quality

We wanted to provide you with an update regarding recent testing of the water at Manvers Lake.

A water sample taken from the lake five days ago has subsequently been reported to us as positive for the presence of blue-green algae (cyanobacteria). At present, however, we have not received the full laboratory report, so we do not yet have information regarding the level detected or whether any toxin testing was undertaken.

Importantly, there is currently no visible evidence of a blue-green algae bloom anywhere on the lake. Since the sample was taken, we have also experienced significant rainfall and changing weather conditions.

We have also received the results of our routine monthly water quality monitoring this week, which has returned our usual excellent result and is rated “Excellent” under the Bathing Water Regulations 2013.

This routine water quality monitoring is separate from the specific blue-green algae testing, but it provides important ongoing information about the general quality of the water at Manvers Lake.

We are now seeking the full laboratory report relating specifically to the blue-green algae result and further clarification of the findings. We will also be arranging further testing to establish the current position.

In the meantime, the lake will remain open.

Persons taking part in water-based activities will be made aware of the recent test result so that they have the information available to make their own informed decision about participation. We would ask everyone to continue to follow any guidance provided by Manvers staff and instructors.

We will continue to monitor the lake closely for any visible signs of a bloom while we await the detailed laboratory information and further testing.

The safety of our members and visitors remains extremely important to us. We believe that keeping everyone fully informed while we establish exactly what the laboratory result means is a proportionate approach based on the information currently available to us.

We will provide a further update as soon as we receive more information.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Bronze AQUA award
Aqua logo bronze.png

We are proud to have been accredited with the Bronze Aqua Award which recognises us as a centre that is actively conserving our site to maximise native aquatic diversity.

Invasive non-native species are one of the top causes of biodiversity loss worldwide. Here in Britain they harm wildlife and the environment, cost the economy over £1.7 billion a year, and can even impact on our health and way of life.

Invasive non-native species cause serious environmental problems that can be irreversible, and interfere with the activities you enjoy by clogging propellers, damaging boats, blocking up waterways making it hard to fish or use them for paddling, and increasing the risk of flooding.
